Role

I joined the Environmental Research Group's air quality monitoring team in 1997. At that time, the team’s main focus was running the 40 or so monitoring sites in the London Air Quality Network (LAQN).

Since then, there has been a sustained expansion in air quality monitoring to the extent that the team now manages and disseminates measurements from over 200 continuous sites across the LAQN and the Home Counties.

Additionally, there has been a growing emphasis upon taking research-based measurements using specialized monitoring equipment – accordingly, the team runs the highly-instrumented sites at Marylebone Road and North Kensington which provide many of the measurements for projects such as ClearfLo.

Current Projects

  • Managing the installation and subsequent operation of a suite of new PM monitoring equipment at the Detling site in Kent for ClearfLo. The resulting measurements will provide detailed information on particle numbers, mass and chemical composition at a rural location some 40 miles to the south-east of London.
  • Ion Exchange Chromatography (IEC) to determine anion and cation concentrations in PM10 sampled from a kerbside monitoring site in central London. This analysis forms part of a detailed chemical speciation study at the site, and builds upon previous IEC analysis undertaken within the team on behalf of defra.
  • Installation of a PM10 monitoring site by the entrance to a quarry in Sevenoaks. Measurements will be analysed to source apportion PM10 and determine the impact of the quarry’s activities on local air quality. In 2005, I completed a similar site installation on behalf of London Borough of Sutton – this time focusing on PM10 emissions around a waste transfer station.
  • Measurement ratification for a cluster of monitoring sites in south London and Surrey.
  • Providing specialist advice to local authorities on areas such calibration gas supply and monitoring site selection.
