Role

I joined the monitoring team at ERG in 2004 after returning from 5 months voluntary work measuring the gas emissions of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. Although the setting is somewhat different, the measurement techniques and equipment maintenance principles share similarities with those used for measuring air quality in London. Before my work in Hawaii, I completed an MSc in Geochemistry at the University of Leeds and a BSc in Geology at the University of Birmingham.

In addition to my share of the core operational tasks of the monitoring team, such as carrying out the Duty Officer role, data validation and ratification and monitoring site operation, I am responsible for arranging the six monthly QAQC site audit programme through the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), dealing with matters related to King’s managed sites affiliated to the AURN and sending quarterly reports for these sites to Defra.

I am a member of the air quality forecasting team; we provide daily forecasts to Local Authorities in London, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and Hampshire. Some of these forecasts are used for local AirAlert services and the forecasting team also provides detailed notifications of elevated pollution events.

I have been involved with the production of the two latest LAQN annual reports and I am currently working on writing up the results of recently introduced tests of the collection efficiency of site sampling systems carried out by NPL during QAQC audits.
